AR Denarius Julius Caesar (49-44 BC as Dictator)

Obverse: CAESAR, elephant trampling serpent to right
Reverse: priestly implements: culullus, aspergillum, axe with wolf’s head at the top and apex

Caesar’s military campaigns were costly, and he needed vast sums of money to pay his legions. In order to finance this Caesar took over the state treasury at the temple of Saturn in Rome and stripped it bare. From this hoard of silver Caesar minted the ‘Elephant’ denarius and used them to fund his armies.
