A Kore (plural Korai) is the modern term used for a type of free-standing ancient Greek sculpture of the Archaic period depicting female figures, always of a young age. Korai are characterised by a distinguised Archaic smile and column-like posture, often one arm extended. The statues were shown with heavy drapery like the presented example. Over time, when fashion changed, with lighter garments.
