Recovered from the wreck of the VOC ship ‘Campen’
With NGC Shipwreck certification
The Campen was a ship of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), which first set sail in 1627. It’s first journey was also to be it’s last. On October 23 the Campen was smashed against the treacherous Needles of the Isle of Wight in a powerful storm. Of the entire cargo only two chests could be salvaged at the time. The wreck was rediscovered in 1979. The new expedition recovered about 8000 coins, among which many reales, lion dollars and half lion dollars.
